Abstract

The influence of the phase composition of high-carbon complex-alloyed bearing steel on its hardness and wear resistance under dry sliding friction conditions has been studied. Using magnetic and X-ray diffraction analysis methods, the change in the residual austenite content was determined to be in the range from 37 to 3 %. It is shown that the maximum wear resistance (2,15·10-5 mm3/(N·m)) is achieved with a content of 30–37 % metastable austenite, despite the reduced hardness (57 HRC). An increase in the proportion of martensite to 90–97 % increases the hardness to 64 HRC; however, the wear rate increases by 140 %.
